This is helpful. I’ve been thinking of installing an RMS Gateway at my QTH for much the same reasons as you.
it took about 4 milliseconds for the digirig lite to sell out. guess i'll see you in august when back orders arrive o/
Happy 4th of July across the DX Land. 73 de Your Friend Uncle Günter 💯🍻
do you need a license to send these emails? God bless our freedom!
Just ordered the digirig 891 and a mobile version for the 2m radio to get the truck full digital, got both of them because of your videos. I'm looking forward to getting everything set up. I got the digirig lite in the cart for my handheld as soon as I figure which audio cable to get. Love the videos.
I like this new digirig! I've been using the basic digirig with the Yaesu "8XX" audio cables and a 6in USB to "Printer USB" from amazon with my 891 in the field with no issues. Raspberry Pi or a windoze system, both worked very well with cat control and audio for FT8 and JS8 Call. Will have to give the DG891 cables a try though to see how things change and improve.
Hey Gaston! Very interesting video, man! I got my license recently and I'm trying to build up some practical experience and my contact net. These DigiRig + digi modes caught my attention and I'm preparing to start using this stuff. One question that I have though, is if this configuration you showed in this video works with HF as well. I mean, just plug into one of your manpacks and use the android device to run the comm. Also I'm curious if that works with that new DigiRig made for the Yaesu FT-891 (because it's the radio I have). Thanks for sharing!!! 73 de SA5PEN
Finally got my Digirig Lite ordered yesterday and ALREADY out of stock! Oh well should have acted faster but then if I did things when I should, it wouldn't be me. I will be happy when it gets here!
Those vertical ellipses are called "hamburgers".
I just moved to the Phoenix area. Would you be available to program a new radio for me? I want to learn but also would really like this setup installed to be prepared for a bad situation. Thanks!
Will these radio receive and transmit over 100 miles as the crow flys?
FYI the new version of WOAD supports the CM1008 GPIO. I haven't been able to test as my tablet uses the old usb mini and I need a usb mini to usb c adapter. The new version also support PTT with RTS which does work just fine my my home brew interface. Unless something has changed the new version still isn't on the Play Store so you must side load it from the authors website... now if ANDFLMSG would add gpio or right channel tone support... we need more great Android apps for portable operators!
get ready for what?
WoAD does have all the ICS froms from WL!
My DigiRig Lite is ordered. Sounds like it won't be here until August.
😊
Way too hot to play Army. Good job though buddy.
I like the 2" screws going thru 1/4" worth of material.. screws are hard to come by tho. Edit: forgot to say..i like the rest
Interesting series, Gaston! It would be an interesting way to use an old phone. It would be so great to have VHF Winlink gateways here. I wonder if you have a plan to making this work on your private business frequencies (e.g. winlink p2p) if things go south?
Amazing content like always!
Guess i am starting on winlink😂😂
Great video! I'm now a DigiRig Lite fan! Do you know an Android App that can be used to access a packet BBS? That will be awesome!
Bad-ass man! I wish WoAD was easier to use. It works but it is a challenge.
I have a surface go with a pretty busted up screen but it still works. Maybe that could be my VHF packet WinLink station.
hi. how do you enter bios? i tried f2, f10, del, volume up+power button but not entered bios. regards from turkey
My dad back in the days of acoustic coupler modems, Bardot paper tape, and teletypes running at 300baud said, "Why would anyone ever want to go faster than 300baud?" This was as he was enjoying coffee and a cigarette while reading Barron's or Computer. It was a half hour well spent running his stock market program on a mainframe that was out of state.
9600 baud next. Love Vara but it requires a computer to run the software modem
Worse...Vara requires Windows. Or Wine.
@@LeeMcc_KI5YPR agreed
This make me realize that I need to up my Winlink game with an alternative method to send email for times when I don't have a tablet/laptop and mobile radio with me. Great content!
I'm heading down the same path right now trying to determine if I have something misconfigured or I just can't reach any of the local packet stations. This is a great jump start. Thanks for all you do. 73.
Thanks for always working with Gaston to provide these great videos.
Can you use the regular DR with this?
My CF 19 and CF 31 I love. I'm in the process of converting CF 19 to Linux.
Great video.
I have been in Communications via radio since 1982ish. When I started, EVERYTHING was analog and wideband. Today, most agencies, especially in the larger metro areas are or have transfered to either 800Mhz trunking, or the new as of about eight to ten years ago to the 700Mhz band. If they have not gone to this, they have ALL gone to narrowband due to a FCC mandate years ago and possibly P25. Cb and Ham are the holdouts thus far for wideband. If you want to be able to monitor ALL comms, you need to aquire a scanner, both handheld AND mobile/base that can recieve P25, mototurbo, and trucking and others with a frequncy spread from 30Mhz to 1800Mhz. This allows you to use that radio to recieve or monitor "other" comms while you are able to maintain comms with your group/area. As an example, Washington has gone to 700Mhz P25 and scrambled in some cases to prevent the public from monitoring. The State Patrol, and other law enforcement agencies, fire protection districts, public transportation, DOT and possibly others have already gone to that band. If you want to find these frequencies, you can look them up via the FCC website, I will not give out specifics as a person can find them in publicly accessible areas. Another set of frequencies to look up is ENG van to studio frequencies, these are the frequencies, if still used, to allow news studios to get reporters live on the air to get the news to you. If you can hear them, they are close as they use low power and directional antennas. Another tip, get some rechargable batteries that can be charged from a 12 volt battery (vehicles) and get some deep cycle or the newer batteries and some solar panels. One final bit of info, when the time comes for SHTF comms, its likely the 3 letter agencies are going to be very busy in metro areas where there is a greater number of people. The FCC will attempt to suspend the HAM radio licenses when it comes time for SHTF, this is my opinion, but when the FCC put out a notice during Covid about "following the letter of the law", it makes sense!! If you do not want to be found do NOT USE "APRS"!! Anyone can recieve and decode these signals and ditch your cell phone and anything else that uses a sim card, including your car. How do you think onstar calls 911??
Hi, where can I find a metal case like yours for my YAESU FTM-3200DR C4FM FDMA / FM 2 meter mobile transceiver? Thanks for the video. Keep them coming. 73
You'd better hurry up the world is going to end next week What is this with American preppers Complete lunatics
Well done. Clear, concise and persuasive. Thank you. More about the CF-20 or an alternate if the unit is no longer obtainable. I agree with your assessment of the 857D: best all-round radio available.
Thank you. Almost all my gear, including the CF-20, is discontinued. However, you can get a refurbished CF-20 Mk2 through a couple of rugged notebook dealers for about $700 USD in excellent condition.
@@TheTechPrepper Thanks. 73
I like dakotas brand but their LiFePo4 batteries don’t nearly have enough constant amperage ratings for amateur radio.
The plug panel alone cost more than that radio
This is incorrect. The Yaesu VX-6R is $249 USD. And, the Powerwerx PanelPlateSW2 Blank Panel is $19.99.
You mentioned using the charger. Am I having a DUH moment, or is it also set up to recharge in a grid-down situation?
I have a portable solar charge controller by Buddipole as well as a 20 watt folding solar panel from PowerFilm. That's what I use for all my 12v batteries in the field. It just plugs into the Anderson PowerPole connector on the front. I should film another Short.
@@TheTechPrepper I’d definitely like to see a short on that. Thanks much!
What's the all time biggest antenna for DMR action?
I'm honestly SHOCKED it's not in a metal case. But looks good!
Thanks. One of my requirements was lightweight. I have a few .50 caliber metal ammo cans on hand, but they're too big and heavy for the intended application.
Only thing you might include is a solar mppt charger like the Powerx 100W.
I have a separate system for charging via solar. I'll just use my existing Buddipole PowerMini and 20 watt PowerFilm folding panel.
Nice!
It is not a generator..it's a power supply.
I have a second modular kit with a small solar charger controller and folding panel. Together they're a generator.
Yes. I would like to see a build video too. Thinking about building one myself. Each I have seen don’t seem too complicated but I would like to see how you did yours with a little more depth.
I'll add it to the backlog. It was a very straightforward build and the topic has been covered by others, so I assumed there would be little interest. The build took about 45 minutes while my wife was making dinner last night. Thanks for letting me know.
Nice purpose built solution! The best thing about custom builds is you can make it exactly how you want it. No features your don't need or will not use.
There's no substitute for tailoring your gear to your needs.
Please do a video on this! I would LOVE to make this box for me and my loved ones.
I said it many times. Should never used a dedicated battery because no one really can upkeep them. Instead use the tool battery like dewalt or Milwaukee as they are always ready from ur garage
Why? They are hardly ever 12v. Although, as a backup with a converter. I guess i want as little equipment as i can.
I think it is up to the operator. Personally, I use my 12v systems every day and constantly maintain them. Additionally, I can charge these via AC mains or my portable solar gear.
@TheTechPrepper i use minr regularly. Maybe not as much as you. I did an activation in north carolina. Mainly because I was there already for a family gathering and needed some training in tree setup.
That depends on what you're doing because I haven't touched my tool batteries in about a month but my 50 amp hour diy battery was just recharged in the last 2 weeks.
@@recoblade1465 not a normal man
What do you think of winlink?
It's another tool. I use it regularly. I also recently set up a Winlink RMS packet gateway as a service to my area. It's worth looking into if you're not a Winlink user yet.
Radio made easy just did a livestream where he makes a Y cable that has Anderson powerpole & the barrel connector to F-Type Terminals. This way you can charge & discharge simultaneously
